People and land
Two hundred years ago the Danube – during its flooding - inundated the alkaline land along its basin through the veins (streams) embedded into its higher flood plain. The people who lived here based their husbandry on the life-giving Danube water. The grassland, marshlands and low places (bottom-lands) were grazed and native-soda was swept on the barren spots.
In the 18th century the scenes of animal husbandry - at first - were the temporary dwelling places (living quarters) and later the permanent residential buildings appeared as well and as a result of it the ploughing up and the agriculture was started as well. The cattle and horse breeding was flourishing in the 19th century but the Hungarian gray cattle was gradually replaced by the Hungarian Simmental which could be kept in the stable as well, therefore alfalfa, clover and later maize were already grown on the plough fields.
The river regulation - started in the second part of the 19th century - didn’t helped further on the traditional husbandry having been developed for hundreds of years. In 1920s started the drainage of the flat wetland habitats along the Danube basin with the construction of the Dunavölgyi főcsatorna (Main Channel of the Danube valley) – its vernacular name was the “Curse channel”- making a radical alteration in the water balance of the landscape. During the socialist agricultural restructuring the large-scale farming system was developed. The farm way of life the peasant farming largely eliminated. The aspect of the landscape has been changed. Today only the smaller spots of saline grasslands – being also valuable in nature conservation point of view – and the glimmering water of some remaining sodic lakes evoke the former rich flora and fauna.
